Julia Montes dedicates Philippine Association of the Deaf recognition to deaf mother
MANILA — Actress Julia Montes expressed her gratitude after she was recognized by the Philippine Association of the Deaf (PADI) for her support and valuable contribution for the Filipino Deaf community.
On Instagram, Montes dedicated the award to her deaf mother and shared that she grew up experiencing the challenges to be her mom’s voice and protector from an unkind society.
“I can truly say that this is one of the most special and meaningful recognitions I have ever received. Growing up with a deaf mom, I experienced firsthand what it means to be her voice and ears in our everyday lives. From helping her communicate with other people to protecting her from judgment, discrimination, and bullying, it was never an easy journey,” she wrote.
Montes recalled how, as a child, she was heartbroken by the way people mocked her mother.
“I remember crying for my Mama because of how other people treated her. There was even a time when I didn’t want to be seen with her — not because I was ashamed of her, but because hearing people whisper, laugh, and mock her broke my heart. As a child, I couldn’t understand why people could be so unkind to someone simply because she couldn’t hear or speak like they did. Those moments stayed with me. They taught me compassion, patience, understanding, and, most importantly, the courage to stand up for people who deserve to be heard and respected,” Montes shared.
She then called for respect and understanding for persons with disabilities.
“People with disabilities may have different abilities, but they are no less than anyone else. They have the same feelings, dreams, dignity, and right to be treated with kindness and respect. Let us never belittle someone because of their disability. Instead, let us learn to understand, include, and respect them,” she said.”
She added: “Today, I receive this recognition with a grateful heart, not just for myself, but especially for my Mama. ❤️ Mama, this one is for you. You may not hear the words I say, but I hope you always feel how proud I am to be your daughter. Thank you, PADI, for 100 years of service, advocacy, and love for the Deaf community. 🤟💙 Deafness is not a limitation to being loved, respected, and valued.”
Montes currently stars in Coco Martin’s “Sigabo.”
