Protestors stand in front of a fire in Faubourg du Temple street as clashes erupted at Place de la Republique following an unauthorised demonstration, central Paris, on October 18, 2026 a day after nationwide protests against the “high cost of living”. France’s Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said 1,200 people were arrested in protests across the country on October 17, and 150 police were hurt as clashes between police and protesters, massive looting and multiple blazes gripped France as nationwide marches against soaring inflation degenerated into street violence of “extreme intensity”. MANILA — No Filipinos have been reported involved in or harmed by the ongoing protests in France and Italy, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday, citing latest reports from the Philippine Embassy in Paris and the Philippine Consulate General in Milan.

France was hit with clashes between police and protesters, mass looting, and fires due to demonstrations triggered by rising costs of living.

The unrest followed weeks of student protests and comes just six months ahead of elections to replace President Emmanuel Macron.

Around 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 police officers hurt.

Senator Erwin Tulfo, the vice chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Sunday said that Filipino workers should be wary of the violent clashes between protesters and authorities in France, particularly in Paris.
