UAAP: Draw with UST keeps Ateneo on track for Final 4

MANILA — Ateneo de Manila University stayed on track for a Final 4 spot in the UAAP Season 89 women’s football tournament after battling to a 1-1 draw with University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Rae Tolentino levelled the match just before halftime off a free kick, and the eventual point was enough for the Blue Eagles to strengthen their hold on fourth place in the league table.

UAAP MediaAteneo has 10 points — five more than UST — with two matches left. UST must win all of its remaining matches, and hope the Blue Eagles fail to take another point, in order to keep alive its Final 4 hopes.

Ateneo nearly took the lead when Jada Bicierro unleashed an attempt, but UST goalkeeper Lizlie Garcia was on hand to make the save.

The Lady Booters drew first blood in the 11th minute, with Joyce Gemberva finding the back of the net after connecting with a perfectly timed cross from Princess Amilhamja.

Tolentino cancelled out UST’s goal and the Lady Booters’ push for a late winner was dashed when Stephanie Logastua sent an attempt over the crossbar.

The result also secured the University of the Philippines a place in the Final Four.
