Rajo Laurel recalls early days assisting with costumes for Regine Velasquez’s first major concert

Rajo Laurel took a trip down memory lane after coming across a photograph taken backstage at Regine Velasquez’s first major concert.

On Instagram, the fashion designer reflected on the early days of his career as he prepared to celebrate his 33rd anniversary in the fashion industry.

“A wave of nostalgia has been occupying my mind lately. With my 33rd anniversary GALA for @asianfashionweek just three days away, and having attended the ‘FINALE’ concert of my dear @reginevalcasid earlier this week, I find myself looking back at where it all began,” he posted on Wednesday, October 21.

Rajo shared that a friend showed him an old photograph during Regine’s concert, bringing back memories of his early years in the fashion industry.

“During the concert, a friend pulled me aside and showed me a photograph that brought back so many incredible memories from way, way… way back. In many ways, this is my ORIGIN STORY,” he recounted.

He then reflected on how the people he met and the experiences he gained throughout his journey helped shape his perspective and approach to fashion.

“I have always believed that I am a product of my experiences and of the people who have touched my life. In one way or another, they all find their way into how I see the world and approach my work,” he highlighted.

The fashion designer revealed that the photograph was taken backstage at Regine’s first major concert.

“This photograph was taken backstage at Regine’s very first major concert, NARITO AKO, at the Folk Arts Theatre. I must have been around 18 years old, assisting my mentor, Louie Mamengo (on Regine’s right), who was designing her costumes for the show. Beside me was our dear friend Joey Espino Jr., fashion director, Louie’s best friend, and creative collaborator,” he relayed.

Rajo also reminisced about how productions were much simpler back then.

“Everything was so simple back then. It was just us. No stylists, no glam teams, no massive camera crews. Regine did her own hair and makeup, and I suspect it was Mang Jerry, Regine’s father, who even took this photograph!” he said.

Rajo went on to explain why the photograph holds a special place in his heart.

“I love this picture so much because it reminds me of where I began, of the people who helped shape me, and of a time when we were simply young, passionate, and finding our way.”

He added: “Thank you, Alelli, for this precious treasure. I will hold it close to my heart.❤️❤️❤️I am certain Louie is smiling down on us from heaven. And Joey, if you happen to see this, please know that I love and miss you very much. Just feeling a little sentimental lately.”
