Why Cherry Pie Picache is against death penalty: ‘Hindi siya solusyon sa krimen’
Kapamilya actress Cherry Pie Picache explained why she’s against the death penalty and how there are other means to get justice in today’s society. In an interview with veteran journalist Kara David, she expressed how she was able to forgive the man who killed her mother and has been an advocate of restorative justice.
The Philippines previously allowed the death penalty, but has since then been prohibited by Republic Act No. 9346. Cherry Pie’s mom, Zenaida Sison, was murdered 12 years ago in her home.
“Yung death penalty, I’m still against it kasi hindi siya talaga sagot. Hindi siya solusyon sa krimen. Mas maraming dapat talakayin. Yung restorative justice, sana mas yumabong pag disseminate ng information. Sana mas rehabilitative para sa mga PDL natin rather than punitive. Umayos para ma rehabilitate talaga sila ng tama,” Cherry Pie expressed.
The actress maintained that while she has forgiven the person, he still has to serve time in jail for the consequences of his actions. Cherry Pie revealed that he is actually doing well as he serves his time in prison.
“Hindi puwedeng walang consequence doon sa evil na ginawa niya. Marami din nagtatanong, so ano? Pinatawad mo na? Oo, pero andoon pa rin siya, pinagbabayaran niya pa rin yung kasalanan niya,” she said.
“Pero ang diperensya, yung pangalawang pagkakataon ng binibigay natin sa kanya na ibalik yung dignidad niya bilang tao. Kahit na pinagbabayaran niya yung kasalanan niya and he’s doing very well–– ngayon, siya ang nasa loob, siya ang nagpapaaral sa mga pamangkin niya sa labas dahil nagtatrabaho siya sa loob,” she added.
When asked about what radical love means for her and how she turned towards her faith in order to understand everything that’s happened to her and her family, she replied, “Ang tanging makakatalo lang sa kasamaan ay isang radikal na pagibig. Yung pagmamahal sa atin ng Diyos, radikal kasi kahit paulit-ulit natin siyang saktan–– paulit-ulit tayo magkamali–– paulit-ulit rin niya tayo bibigyan ng pagkakataon para isaayos ang buhay natin kasi ginawa niya tayong mabuti. Yun sa akin ang radikal na pagmamahal.”
