Cops using impounded vehicles? PNP probes alleged violation

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday it was investigating reports that police officers were allegedly using impounded and recovered vehicles for personal errands inside Camp Crame.

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday it was investigating reports that police officers were allegedly using impounded and recovered vehicles for personal errands inside Camp Crame.

PNP Chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered concerned units to account for all seized vehicles under police custody and investigate any unauthorized use following concerns raised by Sen. Raffy Tulfo.

Tulfo said he received reports that recovered stolen vehicles, which should either be returned to their rightful owners or preserved as evidence, were allegedly being used by police personnel for personal purposes.

“Recovered and impounded vehicles are not personal property of any police officer. They are under police custody for a specific legal purpose and must be handled with strict accountability,” Nartatez said in a statement.

The PNP chief directed concerned units to establish the status of the seized vehicles and determine whether any personnel violated existing policies.

Those found responsible could face administrative and criminal charges, depending on the results of the investigation.

“No one is above our policies, and no position or assignment gives any personnel the privilege to misuse property entrusted to the PNP,” Nartatez said.

“Any personnel found abusing their authority will be held accountable under the law. Public trust depends on our ability to enforce the rules fairly, including within our own ranks,” he added.
