Marcos says Michelin Guide ‘important opportunity’ to lure more tourists, help MSMEs in PH
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. graces the Michelin Guide’s awarding ceremony for its 2027 selection in the Philippines. Karen Flores Layno, ABS-CBN NewsMANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday expressed optimism that the Philippines’ growing number of Michelin-awarded restaurants and hotels would attract more tourists, saying that these recognitions from the century-old gastronomic and hospitality guide are “achievements that reflect the talent, creativity, and dedication” of Filipino chefs and their teams.
During Michelin’s 100th anniversary celebration in Manila, Marcos underscored that the body had already recognized 108 food establishments last year, as well as 9 resorts and hotels in the Philippines.
“This growing recognition presents an important opportunity for Philippine tourism,” the President said.
“Our country is known for our beautiful islands, our rich history, and a vibrant culture. Now, our cuisine can become another reason for travelers to visit, explore our regions, and to stay longer,” he said.
“We want this growing interest in Philippine cuisine and hospitality to create opportunities for more Filipinos.”
Generating greater interest in FIlipino cuisine may translate into “more opportunities for our farmers, our fisherfolk, food producers, and our MSMEs,” the Chief Executive said, underscoring how several Michelin-star restaurants here have been putting local ingredients and crops at the front and center of their menus.
“For our part, government will continue to improve infrastructure and air and sea connectivity to make these destinations more accessible,” Marcos said.
“We also support culinary education and skills development for aspiring chefs and hospitality professionals,” he said.
“Our goal is to create an environment where Filipino talent and business can thrive, and where culinary tourism brings more jobs and livelihoods to our communities.”
Marcos ended his speech by thanking the Michelin Guide “for bringing its expertise and global perspective to the Philippines” and “helping introduce our culinary landscape to a wider international audience.”
“Let us continue to invest in our culinary talent, preserve our regional food traditions, and encourage the next generation of Filipinos to innovate while remaining rooted in who we are,” he said.
“Let us welcome the world to our table, and with good food and the warmth of Filipino hospitality.”
From last year’s 108 establishments, the 2027 Michelin Guide for the Philippines has expanded to include 127 restaurants across three distinctions: Stars, Bib Gourmand, and Selected.
