Tim Yap Talks About the Artwork That Inspired ‘Shake, Rattle & Ball: LUCID – Dreams and Nightmares’
Halloween in the Philippine entertainment and nightlife scene is incomplete without eventologist Tim Yap‘s “Shake, Rattle & Ball.” It has become a tradition for many since it started in 2019. And with a name that’s a play on words on the iconic Philippine horror anthology series Shake, Rattle & Roll, this Halloween staple has also established and embedded itself in the local culture scene.
Not your ordinary costume event, Tim Yap elevates Halloween dressing into an art form, encouraging creativity and pushing the boundaries of imagination through various themes, such as Apocalypse in 2019, Dystopia in 2022, and Philippine folklore and fairytales from 2023-2025.
This year, “Shake, Rattle & Ball” presents “Lucid.” Lucid means several things, but it basically pertains to being awake, sane, and having a clear understanding of something. In the context of this Halloween event, lucid is reimagined as a way of interpreting one’s imagination.
The dress code? “Come as a dream. Come as a nightmare.”
“What if your dreams became reality? And your nightmares came to life? This October 31, the line between dreams and nightmares disappears,” Tim teased. “Because for one night, anything you can dream of, you can become.”
As a creative, Tim Yap is always on the lookout for inspiration from anyone, anything, and anywhere. And sometimes, inspiration comes when you least expect it. Tim shared that, for this year’s “Shake, Rattle & Ball,” an artwork triggered the creative momentum.
“Last January at @artfairph, I found myself mesmerized by an entire wall of earthly and otherworldly delights by @freak.tures the husband-and-wife collaboration of Frelan and Karina Gonzaga.
“I met the artists, walked away, and tried not to be possessed by what I had seen. But the artwork kept calling me. Eventually, I gave in. And now, that extraordinary world lives in my home.
“Little did I know it would become the inspiration for this year’s @shakerattleandball : LUCID — Dreams and Nightmares. From the invitations to the visual language of the ball, and everything you’ll experience tomorrow, it all began here.”
Standing in front of his stunning artwork inspiration, Tim Yap wore his pre-Halloween costume: a simple, trusty black sweater. But now, his dream has begun, and tonight, his transformation into a dream or a nightmare will unfold.
“Tomorrow, we open the doors to a world where the extraordinary, the surreal, the dreamers, and the freaks all belong,” Tim shared. “A celebration of imagination, individuality, and the freedom to become whatever you dream or dare to be.”
