LTFRB focused on riders’ welfare as it fines MC taxi platform for going beyond cap
Motorcycle riders donning rain gears traverse the southbound lane of EDSA -Cubao on August 1, 2023. Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/FileMANILA —The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said it is “crafting measures” to help riders after it penalized a motorcycle riding platform for taking on more riders than it was allowed to.
The board has yet to name the company involved “in the interest of due process as the legal proceedings are still considered ongoing.” It said the company has filed a motion for reconsideration of the LTFRB’s decision.
In the meantime, LTFRB said, it is focused on the welfare of the motorcycle taxi platform’s riders “whose only fault was that they acted in good faith and trusted that they were allowed to operate under the existing rules and regulations”.
The Philippine Star on Tuesday, citing a document it obtained, said the LTFRB had fined MoveIt for onboarding 55,575 more riders than it was allowed to.
The board reportedly fined the company P555.7 million, or P10,000 per excess rider.
“The LTFRB is currently crafting measures in dealing with this sensitive issue in relation to the affected riders,” the board said Tuesday.
Motorcycle taxis are a popular option among commuters because of high fuel prices, heavy traffic, and cramped public transportation.
