Barbara Palvin defends her postpartum runway comeback amid mixed reactions
Barbara Palvin said the response to her return to the spotlight just six weeks after giving birth was divided, with some people celebrating her comeback while others felt she should have stayed home to rest.
The model welcomed her first child, Sylvie, with husband Dylan Sprouse in September. She made her return to the runway during the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Los Angeles on October 18, a moment that drew attention from fans and viewers around the world.
In a new interview with E! News, Barbara revealed that reactions to her appearance were “50-50.” She spoke to the outlet during the couple’s Sprouse House Halloween Party on October 31.
“Some people loved that I was back, and some people were like, maybe I should be resting at home,” she said.
Barbara emphasized that every mother goes through a different experience after giving birth, saying: “Everyone’s postpartum journey is different and this is just mine.”
The model credited her husband and family for helping make her return to work possible, recognizing the support she received while adjusting to life as a new mother.
“I’m lucky that I have the support from my husband and my family,” Barbara said. “And they were able to get me there.”
Dylan had also expressed his support for his wife ahead of the fashion show. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor shared how proud he was of Barbara and said he was looking forward to seeing her back on the runway.
“Barbara feels ready and she’s done her darndest. I think this is gonna be the one where she has a moment and I’m excited. She really deserves it,” he said.
Following the show, Barbara also took to Instagram to thank Victoria’s Secret for welcoming her back while allowing her to embrace her postpartum experience.
“A huge thank you to @victoriassecret for embracing me exactly where I am in my postpartum journey and making me feel so beautiful and confident. I mean, we were literally sewing nursing pads into my bras backstage! 😂 A little reminder of the reality behind all the glam.”
She also acknowledged that returning to work so soon after giving birth was a decision she was fortunate to make, pointing out that not all mothers have the same opportunity.
“Going back to work was a choice I was lucky enough to make. And while I’m so grateful for this opportunity, I can’t help but think about all the mothers who don’t have that choice,” she said.
In her post, Barbara highlighted the challenges faced by working mothers in the United States, where many are expected to resume work just six to eight weeks after childbirth, often without access to paid maternity leave.
“Mothers deserve more time, more support, and more choices,” she maintained.
She also reminded fellow mothers that her appearance on the runway was only one part of her experience, and that everyday moments after childbirth deserve recognition, too.
“One thing I really want to say is that every postpartum journey looks different, and none of us should ever feel the need to compare. What you saw on that runway was me all dolled up, but my everyday postpartum reality looks very different.”
She continued: “Some days, just finding time to take a shower or sit down and eat a meal in peace feels like a huge accomplishment. And that deserves to be celebrated too.”
Barbara added that mothers share a meaningful experience regardless of what their days look like or whether they have returned to work.
“Because whether you’re walking a runway, going back to work, or simply making it through another sleepless night, we all have one incredible thing in common: we created a miracle. And that alone deserves to be celebrated.”
“Motherhood is hard, beautiful, messy, emotional, and so, so worth it,” she emphasized.
