WHO SAID THIS: Tim Allen brings Buzz Lightyear to life in ‘Toy Story’

“To infinity and beyond!”

This iconic catchphrase belongs to Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen), the heroic Space Ranger action figure introduced in Pixar and Disney’s 1995 animated film Toy Story. Complete with a laser beam, karate-chop action, and pop-out wings, Buzz uses the line to express his confidence as a space adventurer. But as the story unfolds, the phrase takes on a different meaning, reflecting his journey from believing he is a real hero to discovering the importance of friendship.

The first Toy Story film takes place in a world where toys come to life when humans are not around. The toys belong to a young boy named Andy, whose birthday celebration brings an unexpected change to the group of toys led by Sheriff Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks).

Andy receives a Buzz Lightyear action figure, who believes he is an actual Space Ranger on a mission to protect the galaxy. During his introduction to the other toys, Buzz demonstrates his features and jumps from Andy’s bed, confidently declaring, “To infinity and beyond!” Although he does not actually fly, the other toys are impressed by his performance.

His arrival, however, makes Woody, Andy’s longtime favorite toy, feel threatened. Buzz quickly becomes Andy’s new favorite, creating tension between the two toys and setting the stage for their unlikely friendship.

When Buzz first says “To infinity and beyond!”, the line reflects everything he believes about himself. He sees no limits to his abilities and is convinced that his purpose is to explore space and defeat the evil Emperor Zurg.

The catchphrase also establishes his personality. Unlike the other toys, who understand that they are playthings belonging to a child, Buzz approaches the world with the seriousness of a space hero. His confidence impresses the toys, but it also creates a divide between him and Woody, who sees Buzz as a threat to his place in Andy’s life.

The phrase is heard again in a very different moment when Buzz watches a television commercial advertising Buzz Lightyear action figures. The advertisement reveals that he is not a real Space Ranger but a mass-produced figure sold at toy shops.

The realization shakes Buzz’s identity. He tries to prove that he can fly by jumping from the second floor of Andy’s house, once again shouting his signature line. But instead of soaring through the air, he falls and breaks his arm.

This moment changes the meaning of the catchphrase. What once sounded like a confident declaration now carries the weight of Buzz’s denial and desperation to hold on to the identity he has always believed in. The words remain the same, but his understanding of himself has been challenged.

Buzz and Woody’s relationship begins with jealousy and conflict. After an argument leads to both toys being separated from Andy, they find themselves trapped in the home of Sid Phillips, a boy known for destroying and modifying toys.

Away from Andy and without the other toys to help them, the two are forced to work together. Their difficult situation gradually changes their relationship, particularly after Woody helps Buzz understand that being a toy does not make his existence meaningless.

Woody reminds Buzz that his purpose is to bring happiness to Andy. This gives Buzz a new sense of direction, allowing him to accept who he really is rather than continue chasing an identity that was never his.

Their friendship reaches its defining moment when they try to catch up with Andy’s moving truck.

As Buzz spreads his wings and glides through the air with his toy friend after being launched on air by a firework rocket, Woody excitedly shouts, “To infinity and beyond!”

This time, the line is no longer simply Buzz’s declaration as a Space Ranger. Woody says it while celebrating what his friend can do, showing how much their relationship has changed.

Buzz, however, reminds Woody that he is not actually flying but falling with style, echoing the words the sheriff once used when they first met.

The exchange brings their story full circle. The phrase that initially represented Buzz’s belief in his own heroic abilities now becomes a shared expression of excitement and friendship. It also shows how the two toys have learned to trust and rely on each other despite their differences.

Released in 1995, Toy Story made history as the first fully computer-animated feature film and the debut feature from Pixar Animation Studios, released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film received widespread critical acclaim, earned more than $404 million worldwide, and received three Academy Award nominations, along with a Special Achievement Academy Award.

Its success introduced audiences to Woody and Buzz, whose friendship became the heart of a franchise that expanded through sequels, television specials, short films, and theme park attractions.

More than three decades after the original film introduced Woody and Buzz, the Toy Story franchise continues with its fifth installment, released in June 2026.

Toy Story 5 earned more than $1 billion making it one of the highest grossing films in the U.S. this year.
