Historic blue wave: Democrats regain control of U.S. Congress in major blow to Trump
The Democratic Party scored a major victory in the U.S. midterm elections, seizing control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in a major setback for President Donald Trump’s administration.
Democrats reclaimed both chambers of Congress, posting a string of victories even in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and South Carolina.
The Republican losses are being attributed largely to rising living costs, tariffs, and the war in Iran, which has driven up gasoline and diesel prices.
Despite his party’s disappointing performance, Trump offered rare praise for his Democratic rivals, saying they had fought hard during the elections.
The U.S. president also acknowledged that the Iran war weighed on Republican candidates. He said he was prepared for Democrats to challenge his legislative agenda, adding that he would use his veto power against proposals he considers unacceptable.
With Democrats now controlling Congress, they could block Trump’s legislative priorities and launch investigations into his administration.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is also expected to become the first Black Speaker of the House. Following the results, Jeffries said the American people were calling for transformational change, adding that House Democrats were committed to improving their lives.
Meanwhile, several Filipino-American candidates in California also emerged victorious.
Mark Pulido won his bid for a seat in the California State Assembly. He will join incumbent Jessica Caloza, who made history in 2024 as the first Filipina elected to the State Assembly, and Christopher Cabaldon.
Pulido said Filipino-American representation in government is important not only to secure a seat at the table but also to give a voice to issues that matter to the community.
Filipina-American Melissa Ramoso also won reelection to the Artesia City Council.
Ramoso said representing her community comes with great responsibility, noting that Filipinos in other cities, across the world, and in the Philippines are also watching her work.
The election results set the stage for a potentially challenging two years in Washington, as Trump and Democratic lawmakers face the task of finding common ground and working together on issues affecting Americans. – ANC, The World Tonight, November 4, 2026
