In Our Own Skin: The rise of P-Beauty and why authenticity is homegrown cosmetics’ greatest asset
With the beauty industry offering a vast array of options for cosmetic and skincare lovers, there is truly no better time to be alive. After years of just having pricier imported alternatives, consumers now have a wealth of local choices that are not only more accessible, but specifically tailored to our unique skin types and climate.
It was precisely this gap in the market that inspired Ever Bilena when it entered the beauty scene in 1983. As Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Denice Sy explains, the company “democratized beauty by making it accessible to all, while also making sure that our products worked with our heat and humidity.”
Since then, the group has expanded to include a diverse portfolio tailored to specific beauty needs: Careline for expressive, younger consumers, Hello Glow for safe, dermatologist-recommended skin rejuvenation; and Ever Organics to bring clean, Korean-made active skincare to the local market. The lineup also features Blackwater and BW Women for tropical-friendly scents, Hyaloo for deep hydration, and Spotlight, a sophisticated cosmetics line launched as a joint venture with ABS-CBN.
Ever Bilena Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Denice Sy Each line, according to Denice, addresses a distinct gap in the beauty space. “Each brand has a defined consumer, a voice, and a purpose,” she tells ABS-CBN Lifestyle, explaining that even when two brands launch similar concepts, each caters strictly to its own audience. “Having eight brands only works if each one has a clear reason to exist.”
It is precisely this laser focus on the consumer that has fueled the brand’s longevity over the decades, allowing it to adapt to shifting behaviors, evolving preferences, and the rise of social media. “When I joined the company in 2014, I saw an opportunity to transform Ever Bilena from a traditional makeup brand into something more aspirational, innovative, and relevant to younger consumers,” shares Denice. “Over the years, we’ve worked on reinventing Ever Bilena while staying true to what made the brand successful in the first place. This transformation goes beyond aesthetics. We’ve invested in better formulations, elevated our packaging, introduced trend-driven collections like EB Coquette, and developed innovations like our Daily Dose SPF line.”

Another recent innovation is Carline’s Stack and Go collection, a system that includes everything from contour, highlighter, blush, skin balm and more, in a sleek stackable format. It’s a great way to save on space for when you travel, or even for your everyday beauty routine, and reflects how intuitively the brand knows its cosmopolitan clientele. “We’ve always known our consumer personally. We make products that perform, we price them so people can actually use them daily, and we show up where Filipinos shop,” says Denice.
Yet in catering to Gen Z beauty lovers, the company makes it a point never to sideline its OG clientele who built the brand’s success. “I don’t think appealing to younger consumers has to come at the expense of our longtime customers,” Denice emphasizes. “A mother and daughter can both love Ever Bilena, even if they discovered it in entirely different ways.”
For her, the vision remains clear: to build a brand that continuously evolves alongside every generation of Filipina.
According to statistics, the Philippines beauty and personal care market was valued at USD 7.1 billion in 2026, and is expected to grow to USD 11.1 billion in 2034. Clearly, there’s a lot of room for local brands to expand and explore, banking on improved formulations, trendier collections, and an intrinsic understanding of the Filipina.
Denice shares that of late, she’s seen a greater appreciation for homegrown brands, in a market that used to be dominated by foreign players and consumers who used to view foreign ones as more superior in quality to local ones. “But that mindset has gradually changed as Filipino brands have elevated our standards in innovation, quality, and branding. Social media has also helped level the playing field, giving local brands greater visibility as a whole.”

With all these things going in favor, it’s indeed a great time for P-Beauty, or Philippine Beauty, to achieve resonance not just on our shores, but globally as well. “Just as K-Beauty has established itself globally, I believe P-Beauty has the potential to build its own identity on the international stage,” shares Denice, whose goal is for their brand to not only go international, but also help elevate the perception of Filipino beauty worldwide.
Another brand that has been making waves in the local scene is Issy Cosmetics, whose name was inspired by their goal to “make beauty easy.” Founded in 2019 by Joel Andrade and Jasmine Ang, the brand’s main assets are its superior formulations, coupled with user-friendly innovations like color correcting concealers and powders. They are also known for their amazing base products that come in a wide range of shades built specifically for our hot and humid weather.

But what makes the brand truly unique is how they’re rewriting the local marketing playbook, going grunge and edgy in an industry normally dominated by girly and glam. Think futuristic and sleek silver packaging, arresting visuals with a rebellious undercurrent, and lots of glitter and bright colors. Then there’s the limited-edition drops that create both a sense of immediacy and excitement, like their collaboration with makeup artist Slo Lopez. The resulting Slo Multiuse Liquid Paint comes in vibrant colors that can be used on its own, or layered with other products to alter the shade.
Banking on their success in the cosmetics category, they also launched a modern fragrance line with perfumes and body care. Their scents are equally intriguing, named after emotions and in a minimalist yet statement flacon. Their newest drop is the Scent of Permission, a passionate gourmand of cardamom, cocoa butter, and brown sugar, with beautiful jasmine, rose water, and cashmere wood.

And while Issy started as an indie brand, it has since evolved to become a major player. Starting with a strong digital presence, they have since laid down roots with various boutiques and kiosks around the metro. In fact their newly-launched flagship, dubbed Matter by Issy, is a futuristic-looking space that allows people to be fully immersed in the brand’s counter-cultural philosophy.

Here, people are free to experiment with the whole product line, while enjoying a selection of specialty drinks and pastries. It’s the brand’s first foray into the F&B industry, a feat that is quite rare for a cosmetics line. Nonetheless, Issy has never really done anything exactly by the book, and that is part of their charisma.
Whether through legacy giants continuously reinventing themselves or bold indie disruptors expanding into lifestyle and sensory experiences, P-Beauty is no longer content to sit in the shadows. It has transformed into a vibrant, self-assured movement, and an authentic expression of local identity. And as homegrown brands continue to push creative boundaries and expand their physical and cultural footprints, one thing is abundantly clear: Filipino beauty is more than ready to take on the world.
