MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is eyeing a low-level security threat as the country prepares to host the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits from November 16 to 18, 2026.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police have been preparing for the high-level gathering, with security measures covering not only the summit venues but also foreign delegates.

“We are eyeing a low-level threat as of now,” Nartatez said.

“Ang PNP ay handa insofar as the security of the activity including the VIPs, attendees and the area kung saan maghe-held, ise-secure natin lahat ‘yun,” he added.

He assured that the PNP has sufficient personnel, logistical resources, and funding to secure the event, adding that the police force will work closely with other government agencies, particularly the local government units hosting the activities.

Nartatez said the PNP will also declare the appropriate alert status and fully utilize its available resources for the security preparations.

Meanwhile, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is tightening security not just around summit venues and official motorcade routes, but also in hotels, billeting facilities, and other establishments expected to accommodate foreign delegates.

NCRPO Officer-in-Charge Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano has directed police district commanders to strengthen coordination with hotel management, property administrators, and private security agencies to ensure immediate reporting and response to any suspicious activity.

Abrahano stressed that security preparations must extend to establishments where foreign delegates will stay, dine, and conduct other activities during their visit.

The NCRPO is also increasing police visibility in strategic areas and establishing clear communication channels with hotel security personnel.

The NCRPO said security measures should remain professional and discreet without unnecessarily disrupting the normal operations of establishments.

“The safety of our foreign delegates is on top of our priority. We expect every establishment involved in accommodating them to remain vigilant and work closely with our police personnel,” Abrahano said in a statement.

“At the same time, we must ensure that our security measures are professional, discreet, and responsive, without disrupting the normal operations of these establishments,” he added.
