Redefining Protection: How AIA Is Reshaping the Future of Health
As Filipinos dream of what it means to live well, AIA Philippines President and CEO Melita Teo is working to bring health and protection closer to everyday life.
What does it mean to live well? Often, it begins with small, intentional choices that shape how we move through each day. A morning run can bring focus before a busy schedule. A walking meeting can create space to think and connect. And sharing a meal with family, even on the busiest days, can remind us of who and what we work so hard for.
These choices reveal what matters most and challenge us to redefine protection around the lives we want to lead. For Melita Teo, President and CEO, AIA Philippines, means moving protection beyond crisis response and connecting health, prevention, and financial security to how Filipinos live every day.
Melita Teo, President and CEO of AIA Philippines“I believe you cannot advocate for healthier living if you don’t make it a priority yourself,” Melita shares. Her mornings begin with exercise, which helps her focus and approach the day with intention. She also makes room for walking meetings, a simple way to keep conversations active and energy levels up.
Having lived and worked in Singapore for many years, Melita saw how health, savings, and protection could be part of a broader approach to well-being rather than concerns reserved for difficult moments. In the Philippines, insurance has often occupied a different place in people’s lives: Something to think about when a diagnosis arrives, an unexpected hospital bill comes in, or a family suddenly has to make difficult financial decisions.
But increasingly, we’re seeing that it’s beginning to change. AIA’s 2026 Rethink Healthy study points to a shift in how Filipinos think about their well-being. Faced with rising chronic illnesses, increasing medical costs, and longer lifespans, more people are moving beyond the familiar “bahala na” mindset and taking a more active approach to their physical health, mental well-being, financial security, and quality of life.
The motivation is often deeply personal. A health scare or medical emergency may be what finally prompts someone to make a change, but the desire behind it is frequently the same: To stay healthy for the people they love and to be present for the moments that matter. The study also shows that Filipinos want to remain active participants in their own health journeys, even when they already have insurance coverage.
SB19 is AIA Philippines’ newest brand ambassadors, bringing Rethink Healthy closer to every Filipino householdFor Melita, this presents an opportunity to rethink what protection should look like. If health is about more than treating an illness, insurance must be about more than paying a claim. It must also help people take better care of themselves while they still have the chance to prevent problems, build healthier habits, and plan for the future.
The role of insurance can evolve from something that you only need when something goes wrong to encouraging people to take an active role in staying well.
“The most valuable claim is often the one that never has to be made because someone stayed healthy,” she says.
Prevention becomes more achievable when people have practical ways to track their progress and reasons to keep going.
Through AIA Vitality, AIA’s science-backed total wellness program, everyday health decisions — from logging regular workouts to completing preventive health screenings — can become measurable habits that earn tangible rewards. Instead of treating wellness as another item on an already demanding to-do list, the program encourages people to build healthier routines one step at a time.
Vitality AppRecently, AIA Vitality also introduced enhanced digital tools and personalized health insights, including new features such as the Food Tracker and Healthy Futures, to help members build healthier habits and make more informed lifestyle choices. Its new Health Assessment provides a personalized view across physical activity, fitness, nutrition, biometrics, health conditions, mental well-being, sleep, and alcohol and tobacco use. It translates this information into three actionable measures: Vitality Age, which compares a member’s health with their actual age; Vitality Health Priority, which identifies areas for improvement; and Vitality Future Health, which estimates the additional healthy years they could gain by making positive changes.
AIA Vitality is reinforced through strong policies and partners to better health like Anytime Fitness, Ayala Malls Cinemas, Enchanted Kingdom, Garmin, Hi-Precision Diagnostics, Ideal Vision, MediCard, Philippine Airlines, Samsung, and more.
What Melita is seeing is that building a healthier population cannot stop with just individual policyholders. It also means reaching people where habits begin and where early intervention can make a difference.
Vitality EventAIA extends its commitment to protection to communities through AIA Healthiest Schools, AIA’s regional health education program for students aged 5 to 17, designed to help young people foster healthy habits that can last into adulthood. The program equips students and educators with practical tools and learning modules focused on healthy eating, active lifestyles, mental wellness, and environmental sustainability, empowering them to drive positive change within their schools and communities.
The AIA Healthiest Schools Changemaker Summit, the program’s annual culminating event where students present their health and sustainability projects, recognized Hicming Elementary School in Catanduanes and Granada National High School-Ballesteros Extension in Iloilo as this year’s top winners
In the Philippines, the program is delivered in partnership with the Corazon Sanchez Atayde Memorial Foundation, Knowledge Channel Foundation, and the Department of Education (DepEd), helping bring health and wellness education to schools nationwide through accessible, engaging, and age-appropriate learning experiences.
AIA recently launched AIA Stadium in Cebu, in partnership with SM Prime HoldingsThe lessons go beyond the classroom. Through the AIA Healthiest Schools Football Clinic, run in partnership with AIA Group’s longstanding partner Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, children can experience the value of movement through sport. The newly opened AIA Stadium in Cebu takes a similar idea into the community, providing a dedicated space where people can come together to move, play, and thrive. Just as important is making preventive care accessible to those who might otherwise struggle to obtain it.
Meanwhile, Hope Mobi Clinic, a partnership between AIA Philippines and The Medical City, delivers preventive healthcare services directly to underserved communities through a clinic-on-wheels. In its latest rollout, the initiative collaborated with the ABS-CBN Foundation and the Department of Education (DepEd) to provide free breast cancer screenings for 100 public school teachers in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. Building on successful programs in San Juan and Pasig, the initiative aims to reach 1,000 women, particularly those aged 50 and above, with critical early detection services.
AIA Philippines, ABS-CBN Foundation, Medical City and DepED bring breast cancer screening to 100 public school teachers in BulacanPrevention matters, but even the most health-conscious families cannot prepare for every diagnosis. When illness strikes, difficulty accessing care and the rising cost of treatment can quickly put years of savings and important life goals at risk.
According to the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and Philippine healthcare studies, cancer and other critical illnesses continue to carry significant health and financial consequences. Cancer treatment can cost from ₱120,000 to more than ₱1 million, while a three- to five-day stay in a private hospital’s intensive care unit may cost between ₱50,000 and ₱200,000, depending on the care required.
For AIA, addressing these realities takes more than offering individual insurance products. It means bringing together the full strengths of the business to support people throughout their entire health journey — from building healthier habits and preventing illness to accessing care, receiving treatment, recovering, and protecting their financial future.
This is the vision behind the One AIA Integrated Health Ecosystem. Strengthened by the integration of MediCard, the ecosystem connects AIA’s insurance expertise, health and wellness capabilities, and nationwide healthcare network to make support more accessible and less fragmented. Recognized by Insurance Asia as the Health Insurance Initiative of the Year in 2026, MediCard enables AIA to provide more connected solutions for individuals, families, and businesses.
For employers, this can mean combining MediCard HMO coverage with group life and disability protection, bringing healthcare access and financial security together in the workplace.

Health challenges can have lasting financial consequences. Solutions such as AIA Critical Protect Plus give customers broader support through multiple critical illness claims and ICU coverage, helping protect both their health and the future they are building,” Melita says.
AIA Critical Protect Plus media and influencer launch in TaguigProtection must also evolve beyond immediate health needs. Platinum Secure combines whole-life protection with guaranteed payouts and milestone bonuses up to age 100, providing greater certainty as customers plan for changing priorities and long-term goals.
Each solution serves a distinct need, but together they reflect one clear strategy: to provide relevant support at every stage of life and health. By connecting wellness, healthcare access, treatment, recovery, and financial protection, AIA is making the health journey simpler, more coordinated, and more responsive to how people actually live.
For many Filipinos, seeking protection is an act of love shaped by family. AIA’s 2026 Rethink Healthy study found that 71% say family relationships affect their mental well-being, 59% see their spending habits reflecting those of their families, and 56% say their daily health choices are influenced by family. Protection is rarely an individual decision — it is about securing children’s futures, caring for aging parents, and ensuring an unexpected expense does not derail a family’s shared plans.
Through BPI AIA, a joint venture of AIA Philippines and Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), protection is made available through familiar banking touchpoints. Products such as BPI AIA Insta Protect and BPI AIA Pamilya Protect offer accessible ways for families to begin addressing their financial security without having to navigate an unnecessarily complicated process.
“These products are designed to meet customers where they are, making coverage easier to understand and obtain,” Melita says.
The goal is to make protection easier to understand and include in everyday financial planning, whether people are reviewing existing coverage or taking their first steps to protect their families.
AIA’s study also found that 56% of Filipinos believe financial planning can be simpler than it seems. Building on this openness, AIA is strengthening its digital tools and customer engagement to help policyholders understand their coverage, address protection gaps, and make informed health and financial decisions.
“Our customer campaigns provide practical information and personalized guidance to help people review their changing needs, strengthen their protection, and plan more confidently for their long-term health and financial well-being,” she says.
AIA is truly reshaping the future by making protection more human, relevant, and accessible to every Filipino. AIA helps people understand how protection, prevention, and overall well-being work together throughout every stage of life.
As AIA Philippines approaches its 80th anniversary, it carries forward a legacy of trust, strengthened by its place within AIA Group, the largest pan-Asian life insurance group, which is present in 18 markets: Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), Vietnam, Brunei, Macau SAR, and India.

For Melita, AIA’s purpose strengthens AIA Philippines’ responsibility to create lasting impact for more Filipinos. This commitment contributes to AIA One Billion, the Group’s ambition to engage one billion people across its markets to live Healthier, Longer, Better Lives by 2030.
“Whether through wellness programs, healthier communities, greater access to healthcare, or innovative protection solutions, our goal is the same: to create meaningful, long-term impact at scale,” she says.

According to Melita, purpose is not only something to advance through the business. It is something she strives to live personally as a leader.
To achieve balance, she says she makes a priority of herself by staying active, making time for regular exercise, and being intentional about recovery.
“More importantly, I make time for the people who matter most to me. While my family and many of my longtime friends are back in Singapore, I’ve been fortunate to build meaningful friendships here in the Philippines as well. They keep me grounded and remind me why the work we do is important,” she says.
The idea of balance is personal, too. “Balance isn’t about dividing time perfectly, but about being fully present wherever you are.”
It is a perspective that connects her own approach to well-being with the broader purpose she sees for AIA.
So, how is AIA redefining protection to build a healthier future for Filipinos? By going beyond responding to crises and helping people take charge of their health, strengthen their financial resilience, and protect what matters most. This is what a Healthier, Longer, Better Life means: having the security and confidence to care for loved ones, pursue aspirations, and live fully today.
