‘Stranger Things’ prequel series set to premiere in 2028
Stranger Things is getting a prequel series.
Netflix has announced that the upcoming series Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is set to premiere in 2028.
According to a press release published on Netflix’s Tudum website, the upcoming series will take place in the 1950s, long before the original Stranger Things characters discovered the supernatural mysteries surrounding Hawkins, Indiana.
The story will also be set earlier than the events depicted in the award-winning stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which delves into Henry Creel’s troubled past in Hawkins in 1959.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer expressed their excitement about expanding the franchise with a new story.
“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” they said in a joint statement.
The Duffer brothers also teased what fans can expect from the upcoming series.
“It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new … actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!” they relayed.
Meanwhile, Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada, expressed her enthusiasm about continuing the streaming platform’s collaboration with the show’s creative team.
“Today, on Stranger Things Day, we’re honored to partner again with Matt and Ross Duffer and Kate Trefry to give fans a new dimension of this universe to step into,” Jinny said.
Stranger Things has grown into a global sensation since it premiered in 2016. It amassed over 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons. Its fourth and fifth seasons have also earned spots among Netflix’s most-watched television seasons of all time.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things premiered with its first four episodes on November 26, 2025, followed by three more episodes on December 25. The series concluded with its finale on December 31.
