Leo Borromeo bags double gold at Makati Speedcubing Open IX
MANILA — Two-time Philippine Championship 4×4 champion and 2025 National 3×3 champion Leo Borromeo emerged victorious after claiming both titles at the Makati Speedcubing Open IX 2026 on Oct. 11 at SM Makati, after posting a 6.05-second average in the 3×3 event.
Borromeo finished ahead of the 12-year old speedcuber Juan Miguel “Uno” Magallanes, who recorded a 6.92-second average, while Gabriel Subion rounded out the podium with 7.64-second average for the main event, 3×3.
The Cebuano speedcuber also bagged the 4×4 title with an average of 26-seconds, finishing ahead of CJ Garon, who posted a 29.13-second average, while Jhon Leinard Agcaoili settled for third, averaging 33.73 seconds.
Despite securing both titles, Borromeo said his main goal at the tournament was to experiment with techniques and become more comfortable competing, rather than focus on winning.
He acknowledged that his finals performance fell short of his expectations but said the experience allowed him to learn lessons he hopes to apply in future tournaments.
“I didn’t do that well to my standards in the finals, but it was enough to win. So, at least there’s that,” Borromeo admitted.
He recorded a 5.2-seconds average during the second round of the 3×3 event, which he described as acceptable performance by his standards.
“Just to have fun and not overthink whenever I solve,” he said.
Moving forward, Borromeo aims to participate in more competitions to become more comfortable in a competitive setting and achieve results he can be satisfied with.
“I just aim to go to more competitions, get used and comfortable in a competition setting, and hopefully I can have results that I can be happy with,” he added.
