EXCLUSIVE: David Pomeranz shares heartfelt love for Filipinos

CLAREMONT, California —Moments before his special concert performance at Vanura’s 25th anniversary celebration at Bridges Auditorium, international singer-songwriter David Pomeranz, whose timeless love songs have captured the hearts of generations of Filipinos, expressed his deep appreciation for the Filipino community, in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News.

Known for his songs “Born for You,” “On This Day,” and his rendition of “Got to Believe in Magic,” Pomeranz reflected on his enduring connection with Filipino audiences, the emotions behind his music, and the legacy he hopes to leave through his songs.

Despite preparing to take the stage for the milestone celebration, the international artist took time to share heartfelt stories about his musical journey and express gratitude to the Filipinos who have embraced his music for decades.

‘Born for You’

When asked which of his many songs he considers his favorite, Pomeranz initially struggled to choose, humorously comparing the decision to a parent selecting a favorite child.

Eventually, he named “Born for You” as his top choice, followed by “On This Day.”

“I’m proud of those songs. I love those songs,” he shared.

But when asked which song he would dedicate to Filipinos, his answer was immediate: “Born for You.”

For Pomeranz, the song represents more than romantic love. It symbolizes a meaningful connection with the Filipino people, whose unwavering support has remained a significant part of his musical career.

“When I sing it, I sing it—obviously, it’s a love song, but I sing it to the audience. I sing it because I mean it,” he explained.

“I feel like we’re destined to be together somehow. I mean, look, it’s kind of unlikely and so beautiful.”

His words reflected a relationship that goes beyond the stage, built through years of shared music, admiration, and emotional connection.

The magic of Filipino karaoke

Pomeranz also acknowledged the enduring popularity of “Got to Believe in Magic,” a song that has become especially recognizable among Filipino listeners.

Although he did not write the song, he expressed his appreciation for its lasting popularity in the Philippines.

“I love that song, and I think, yeah, it’s the most popular,” he said.

He also recalled amusing experiences visiting Filipino friends, where karaoke inevitably becomes part of the gathering.

According to Pomeranz, after dinner, he is often invited into the living room, where someone eventually plays one of his songs and expects him to join in.

The singer laughed while recalling those moments, recognizing how deeply music is woven into Filipino culture.

For many Filipinos, his songs are more than familiar melodies. They have become soundtracks to love stories, celebrations, and personal milestones.

The emotions behind his music

Beyond his recognizable voice and romantic ballads, Pomeranz believes that authenticity is what allows music to connect with people.

When asked how he consistently delivers emotionally powerful performances, he revealed that personal memories and relationships often inspire him onstage.

Sometimes, those emotions become overwhelming.

He recalled performing “Undying Admiration,” a song he wrote for his wife, and becoming deeply moved while thinking about her.

“Sometimes I still cry,” he admitted.

For Pomeranz, allowing himself to experience genuine emotions while singing is essential to his artistry.

“I love to sing for real,” he emphasized.

He explained that the music he grew up admiring was rooted in authentic human experiences, something he believes he shares with Filipino listeners.

“I think that’s what Filipinos and I share, is the love of that music. Some people call it sentimental, but it isn’t. It’s real. It’s emotional. It’s real communication.”

His perspective highlights why his songs continue to resonate with audiences, even decades after their release.

Whether expressing love, longing, gratitude, or hope, Pomeranz believes that music becomes most powerful when performers genuinely connect with the message they are delivering.

More than fame, a legacy of kindness

As the conversation turned toward his legacy, Pomeranz was asked how he would like to be remembered 20, 50, or even 100 years from now.

Rather than focusing on fame, recognition, or musical achievements, his response centered on the impact he hopes his music has on people’s lives.

“I’m just happy that I can contribute. I’m happy that I can lighten the load,” he said.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring comfort and happiness to listeners, particularly Filipinos who have embraced his music throughout the years.

“It makes me proud and happy to be doing that with Filipinos all over the world, because you are some of the dearest people I know,” he added.

His answer offered a glimpse into the values behind his decades-long career: humility, gratitude, and the desire to make a positive difference through music.

Perhaps the most touching moment of the interview came when Pomeranz was asked to deliver a message directly to his Filipino supporters.

His response was filled with gratitude and affection.

“You’ve opened your arms to me and my family for all these years, and it’s an experience that’s almost difficult to describe to my friends and to my family,” he shared.

“But they see it on my face when I come back from the Philippines. And I love you guys. I really do.”

His heartfelt message underscored a special relationship with the Philippines that has endured through changing generations, musical trends, and the passage of time.

Before concluding the exclusive interview, Pomeranz graciously sang a few lines from “Born for You,” offering a personal musical dedication to the Filipino audience.

It was a fitting conclusion to a conversation centered on love, gratitude, and the enduring power of music.

For Pomeranz, the Philippines is more than a country where his songs became popular. It is a place where his music found a lasting home in the hearts of millions.

And for Filipinos around the world, his songs remain a reminder that while generations may change, music that speaks sincerely to the heart can remain timeless.
