Prince Harry shares how he feels connected to his late mom Princess Diana through his charity work
Prince Harry reflected on how he continues to feel connected to his late mother, Princess Diana, particularly through the work he has pursued over the years.
“Having done the work that I’ve done, there is a connection still with my mom that I really do feel her energy at certain times and certain parts of my life,” he said in an interview with GQ.
Harry explained that the charitable causes he has chosen to support have allowed him to feel a connection to his mother, whose legacy he hopes to continue through his work.
“Everything I do, everything I put my energy towards, I hope that my mother will be proud about it. Trying to continue and protect her legacy, what I didn’t realize was the work that I ended up choosing, or the work that I ended up getting drawn in and attracted to, was so similar to the work that she was doing,” he said.
In the same interview, Harry also opened up about the guilt he once felt over experiencing happiness without his mother.
“I’d spent so long emotionally numb, to a large extent, because I felt disloyal and guilty for the possibility of being happy and joyful without her,” he recalled. “I felt like I had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb in order to prove to her that I missed her.”
However, Harry shared that his perspective eventually changed when he realized that his mother would have wanted him to live a happy life.
“The reality is, what I discovered was actually that she just wanted me to be happy. And that was a huge mental shift for me. It freed me, and it gave me a whole different outlook on life,” he shared.
Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, recently returned to the United Kingdom with their two children after living in the United States for six years.
In the same interview with GQ, the Duke of Sussex revealed that giving their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the opportunity to experience British education was among the main reasons behind their move.
Aside from their children’s education, Harry shared that being closer to his family was another factor that influenced their decision to relocate.
