3 hurt in Manila hammer attack after alleged denied loan

MANILA — A 20-year-old man was mauled by residents in Sampaloc, Manila, on Wednesday night after allegedly attacking three people with a hammer inside an apartment unit.

CCTV footage shows a wounded woman dragging the suspect and calling for help after the incident.

Police responding to the scene found bloodstains inside the bedroom of the victim’s sibling.

Manila Police District (MPD) spokesperson PMaj. Philipp Ines said the suspect and the primary victim were friends who got into an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.

“Habang nagkakaroon ng komosyon doon sa room, narinig ito nung kapatid ng ating biktima at kasama na rin ‘yung kanilang katulong na isang 62 years old,” Ines said.

The victim’s sibling and their household helper went to check on the commotion but were also allegedly attacked by the suspect with the hammer when they entered the room.

Police recovered the hammer allegedly used in the attack.

All three victims were rushed to the hospital with injuries to various parts of their bodies.

According to the initial investigation, the altercation allegedly stemmed from a dispute over money.

The primary victim remains hospitalized in critical condition, while the suspect is also receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the mauling.

The suspect is facing three counts of frustrated murder.
