The Early-2000s Running Shoe You Forgot You Loved Is Back

Nearly a decade after it quietly slipped off shelves, the Nike Skylon 11 is making its inevitable return. The once-elusive performance shoe is officially back, swapping its pure racing pedigree for a second life in contemporary street style. Originally designed as a lightweight, responsive trainer for serious runners, the silhouette retains its signature archival DNA, reimagined for an era currently obsessed with retro running aesthetics.

First introduced in the late 2000s, the original Skylon 11 paired aerodynamic design with ultra-responsive cushioning, earning a cult-like following among elite runners. Even long after Nike stopped production, dedicated runners held onto their pairs, cementing its status as an understated cult classic.

Fast forward to now, as early-2000s Y2K performance gear dominates everyday fashion, Nike Sportswear is officially bringing the model out of the vault. Complete with its distinct Air Zoom tooling, layered upper, and undeniable track heritage, the Skylon 11 seamlessly transitions into modern wardrobing.

Spearheaded by David Mawdsley, Expert Footwear Designer at Nike Sportswear, the redesign thoughtfully bridges past nostalgia with modern execution, keeping the iconic silhouette recognizable while appealing to a fresh audience.

“We’re always exploring new ideas,” says David. “But those new ideas have to have a sense of familiarity, and that comes from our archives. We’re looking back to push forward.”

Staying true to its original structure, the revived Skylon 11 sports a breathable mesh upper in striking Volt, offset by sleek Black and Metallic Silver overlays. Its chunky Air Zoom midsole features deep flex grooves and exposed pods, offering a balance of lightweight support and flexibility. For those looking for alternative palettes, additional colorways (ranging from sleek Black to eye-catching Hyper Pink) are rolling out this season.

More than a routine retro release, the Skylon 11 demonstrates Nike’s knack for mining its performance heritage to create contemporary essentials.

As David sums it up: “When you wear products that emulate speed, you feel like you’re living in action. Speed isn’t necessarily a physical pace. It can be a mental pace. It’s progressive. And in that way, progressive and speed go hand in hand.”

The Nike Skylon 11 is available now at Nike.com and Nike Retail in Singapore.
