It’s time!
Mariah Carey ushered in the holiday season with a new video, continuing her annual tradition of welcoming Christmas with her iconic hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
On her Instagram page, the clip opens with the singer sporting a punk-inspired look as she performs “Hermit,” a track from the 1995 album Someone’s Ugly Daughter.
The album was released under the band name Chick, a collaboration with her friend Clarissa Dane. Mariah wrote and produced the project and contributed background vocals.
As her performance of “Hermit” comes to an end, the clock strikes midnight, signaling the start of November 1, as Mariah exclaims, “It’s time!”
The scene then reveals the singer dressed in a red-and-white Christmas ensemble atop a giant Christmas tree as her iconic holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” starts to play.
The video has already reached more than 33 million views on Instagram as of this writing.
Fans online were quick to react to the video.
“AND JUST LIKE THAT… THE QUEEN OF CHRISTMAS HAS SAID IT’S TIME!” one fan wrote.
“ICONIC!!! ITS TIME!!! Queen Mariah Season has began!!!” another fan said.
Mariah’s holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was first released in 1994 as part of her fourth studio album, Merry Christmas. Over the years, the song has become a Christmas staple enjoyed by listeners around the world.
A music video for the song dubbed as the “Make My Wish Come True Edition” was released in 2019 and has since accumulated more than 926 million views.
In 2021, the song achieved diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Meanwhile, a 2022 report by The Economist estimated that the singer earns approximately $2.5 million in annual royalties from the holiday classic.
Beyond her music, Mariah has often spoken about her love for Christmas.
“When I’m not on stage and I’m in holiday mode, there are rules that I set. I don’t care who it is – the kids, if I have guests, whatever – nobody is allowed to play or watch anything other than a Christmas-related thing,” she stated in a previous interview with USA Today.
“If I wake up in the middle of the night and walk into the living room, and the music isn’t playing and the lights aren’t on, I just can’t handle it,” she added.
