Pope Francis names new bishop for Nueva Vizacaya diocese

POPE Francis has appointed BISHOP Jose Elmer Mangalinao as the new head of the Diocese of Bayombong in Nueva Vizcaya.

Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, read Pope Francis’ appointment letter to Mangalinao who was installed at the Cathedral of Saint Dominic.

The Cabanatuan-born Mangalinao, who was auxiliary bishop of Lingayen-Dagupan, will be the third bishop of the Bayombong diocese, succeeding Bishop Ramon Villena. Before Villena was Bishop Albert Van Overbeke.

In October 15, 1985, Mangalinao was ordained a priest of Cabanatuan.

He earned a licentiate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ (CNCP) news site said.

Mangalinao also used to be the vicar general of the Diocese of Cabanatuan and served as president of the College of the Immaculate Conception.

His other previous posts were formator at the Maria Assumpta Seminary and parish priest at the Saint Isidore the Worker parish in Talavera town, Three Kings parish in Gapan, and St. Nicholas of Tolentine Cathedral, the site said.  CATHERINE MODESTO
