Magandang araw Ms. Rica,

Me and my wife are relatively young. In our late 20s, married for one year. Nakakita ng lump sa breast ng asawa ko ‘yung doktor niya. Tinetest na ito ngayon. We are trying to prepare ourselves so we want to know sana if ever man ma-diagnose siya with cancer, paano ito makakaapekto sa pagkakaroon namin ng baby at kung paano makakaapekto ang treatment sa pagbubuntis? Mas mainam kayang huwag na kaming magtry kung sobrang risky?

                                                                                                          Maraming Salamat,

                                                                                                          Robert Worry

Hi Robert Worry,

Mabuti at nadetect at napa-evaluate ang lump sa breast ng iyong asawa. Mas maagang detection is better with these things. Now, I understand the mindset of preparing yourself for the worst case scenario. If your wife does have cancer, ang kanyang fertility and capability for pregnancy will vary depending on several factors. Kasama na dito ang klase ng treatment that she will undergo.

Fortunately, babies from breast cancer survivors are healthy naman as women who do not have cancer. Pero kailangan mong isipin na siyempre ang chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone therapy may have a negative effect on the fertility ng isang babae. Magiging mas mahirap ito dahil ang mga gamot na ginagamit sa chemotherapy may damage the eggs. Chemotherapy is also linked to increased risk of premature menopause or kahit magresume ang period, umiiksi ang fertility timeframe.

Ang waiting time usually given by doctors after treatment is around six months before you try to conceive. Ito kasi ang timeframe to see whether the cancer is recurrent. In these cases, mas matagal ang waiting time until magtry kayo. Another concern will be breastfeeding especially if the lump can be surgically removed.

You and your wife might want to consider freezing her eggs just to be safe for future consideration. It is better to raise these things both with your doctor and your OB. You should consult with them on how to plan for pregnancy while going through this difficult time. I hope that helps. Hoping for the best. :)

Love and Lust,

Rica
