FILIPINO English teachers have been warned by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) against the illegal recruitment activity of an English school in Japan.

POEA Administrator Bernard Olali on Thursday said the Heart English School, according to the Philippine Labor Office (POLO) in Tokyo, has been directly recruiting Filipino assistant teachers without authority from the POEA.

The POLO report said the school has a Filipino contact who has been facilitating the travel of teachers as tourists or the conversion of student visa to teacher’s visa of those already in Japan.

POLO Tokyo added that the school has continued to defy its advice to recruit Filipino teachers through a licensed recruitment agency in the Philippines on the premise that it was a Japanese company and has no obligation to abide by Philippine regulations.

Olali said that such an argument and unauthorized practice exposed teachers to possible abuse. WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
