The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is investigating the illegal dumping of about 1,500 pounds of crab in Maple Ridge.

Officials say an investigator on June 29 found three piles of Dungeness crab discarded in a farmer’s field, likely on June 24 or 25, based on the deterioration of the crabs.

DFO spokesperson Leri Davies said crabs deteriorate quickly and begin to smell in a very short amount of time.

The incident violates the Fisheries Act and its regulations, which prohibits the waste of any fish that is suitable for human consumption, said Davies.

There is no cleanup required because the farmer is content to leave them in the field, Davies added.

The DFO posted photos of the unusual find on Twitter Thursday, and is asking anyone with information to call 1-800-465-4336.
