Abbotsford police say a backyard assault that was reported earlier this month in the city’s Clearbook area did not happen.

On Aug. 6, a 42-year-old woman told police she was alone in her backyard around midnight when she was attacked from behind by a stranger.

After initially warning the public to be vigilant in response to what they described as a “sexually motivated” attack, Abbotsford police now say the assault did not happen and there is no risk to public safety.

“Details have emerged in the investigation that this assault did not occur as initially reported and was influenced by a historical traumatic event that occurred in another province,” the police said in a statement.

Abbotsford police say the woman, who was not named, has offered an apology to the community for causing alarm.

Police say investigators are working with community partners to ensure the woman receives proper support.
