Climate activists with Extinction Rebellion plan to takeover the Burrard Bridge on Monday as part of a non-violent global rebellion.

The #BridgeOut event will see a number of activists occupying Burrard Street Bridge, as a continuation of the thousands-strong climate march that took place last month.

A statement shared online addressed authorities, the general public and Indigenous groups by saying the rebellion is because there is “no other choice.”

“We do not want to be causing disruption to people going about their everyday lives, but we have no other choice,” the statement read.

“The Canadian government is failing to act on the climate crisis and to protect its citizens. We have no political affiliation; we are everyday people just like you.”

The event is set to begin at 8 a.m. and it is unclear what time organizers plan to end the event, though there is some indication some activists may remain on the bridge for multiple days.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be permitted to cross on sidewalks and bike lanes, which will remain unobstructed.

Organizers have said that they are a “non-violent, peaceful and disciplined movement” but understand and will not resist if police need to conduct arrests of anyone breaking the law.

Extinction Rebellion also has plans to occupy the Bloor Viaduct in Toronto and the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax, along with a mass roadblock taking place in Montreal.
