Richmond Mounties are tight-lipped after a bizarre accident involving two RCMP vehicles and two civilian vehicles early Monday afternoon that left one person seriously injured.

The aftermath of the multi-vehicle collision was captured on video and shows two damaged RCMP vehicles — a cruiser and an SUV — that appear to have struck each other head on. The cruiser appears more seriously damaged.

The two damaged civilian vehicles are further down Gilbert Road, between Blundell Road and Lucas Road.

When asked for details, Richmond RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang told Postmedia News “A police incident has occurred in Richmond and the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has asserted jurisdiction. The B.C. RCMP will be providing information on this matter. ”

In a tweet, the Independent Investigations Office said it had been “notified of an incident in Richmond. Further details will be released when available.” The IIO investigates officer-related incidents that result in death or serious harm.

A call to the B.C. RCMP media line was not returned at deadline.

B.C. Emergency Services confirmed one person was seriously injured in the collision and was transported to hospital in serious condition.

Gilbert Road between Blundell and Lucas remains closed.
