May risk po ba of getting HIV from oral sex? Sabi po kasi ng mga kaibigan ko, okay lang daw po mag oral sex without a condom as there are no risks of getting STIs including HIV compared to anal sex or vaginal sex. Kailangan ba ay naka-condom pa rin kahit oral sex lang?

That’s a good question to ask. Generally, ang risk ng transmission of HIV during oral sex nang walang condom ay mababa. But, it doesn’t mean na no risk ito. Baka-nalito ang mga friends mo at naisip nila na ‘lower risk’ means ‘no risk,’ pero, that’s not the case.
It is true that unprotected oral sex has a lower risk of HIV transmission than unprotected anal or vaginal sex. However, may iba’t ibang factors na nakakapagpataas ng risk na ito. Kung meron kang open sores sa bibig tulad ng singaw ay mas mataas ang risk na ikaw ay magkaroon ngkasama na ang HIV, if you have oral sex with an HIV-positive partner. Also, if you have oral sex with a person with semen with high concentrations of the virus, pinapataas din nito ang risk mo na mahawa. In terms of cunnilinguso oral sex sa vulva or vagina, doing it on a person who is menstruating and HIV-positive can significantly increase your risk dahil mataas ang concentration ng HIV virus in the blood. Kahit na ang HIV-positive person ang gumagawa ng oral sex, theoretically, pwede pa rin niyang ma-transmit and virus to the other person, pero mas maliit ang risk. Ang paggamit ng condom o dental dams ay significantly na nakakapagpababa ng risk na ito. Ang pag-inom din ng gamot na pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can help lower the risk of people getting infected, particularly for those who may be at a higher risk.
Also, hindi lang HIV ang pwede ma-transmit through unprotected oral sex. Iba’t ibang STIs katulad ng herpes and gonorrhea can be transmitted more easily through oral sex than HIV. May mga cases ng kabataan ngayon na nagkakaroon ng gonorrhea of the mouth dahil sa unprotected oral sex. Kailangan din ng matinding pag-iingat dahil most of these STIs are asymptomatic.
