YouTube has released its lists for the 11th-annual YouTube Rewind documenting Canadian viewing trends in 2019. While there is no shortage of globally trending material highlights in our national tallies, this year’s list boasts more Canada than previous ones.

In the Top Trending videos, Coach Jeremy (a.k.a. Jeremy Rupke), captured the nation’s views by mic’ing his four-year-old son Mason during a hockey game. With over 12 million views and 321,000 subscribers, the Barrie, Ont.-based hockey coach and player behind the howtohockey.com instructional site beat out all but celebrity shouter/chef Gordon Ramsey for the most views across the country.

The second most popular Canadian-generated content was CBC News’ Canada Votes 2019: Election Night Special.

Such ultra-important topics as the James Charles and Tati Westbrook drama, UCLA Athletics gymnast Katelyn Ohashi’s perfect 10.0 floor routine, and Carpool Karaoke with Céline Dion rated higher with the viewing public than the political future of the country. Okay, Céline rocks Canuck cred.

Music is still a majority pull for YouTube views and the only Canadian artist to make the Top 10 up North was Shawn Mendes. Señorita, his duet with Camila Cabello was in the #4 spot nationally and didn’t make the top 10 globally. Rapper Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) Remix was the planet’s most popular music video. The official movie for Old Town Road also made the world’s most viewed list in the #5 spot. Talk about a tune riding the charts until it can’t ride any more.

But Mendes and Cabello landed back in the top spot on the Most Liked Music Videos (Global list) securing the #1 spot with 13.3 million likes and counting.

Gaming, which is a key part of the YouTube brand, saw its most-subscribed creator PewDiePie (a.k.a. Swedish YouTuber Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, 102 million subscribers) put Minecraft back in the Most Watched Video Games top spot once again. PewDiePie posted his first Minecraft-related video in years in late June and the game and all its adjunct parts soared in total views.

The Swedish-American Warner Bros. Pictures fantasy/action film Minecraft is set to be released on March 4, 2022.
