Building a good career requires the ability to get along with people, a nurturing environment, encouragement from peers, a generous sprinkling of soft skills, much more than just technical knowledge. One way to look at your career trajectory is like farmers who tend to their land and crop. Here are ten valuable lessons you can learn from a farmer to build your career.

1.Start by getting the soil ready: A farmer starts by putting in the work to make the soil, nutrient-rich for growth. In the same manner, you must make a conscious effort to build your career in a secure organization or workplace abundant with opportunity. Choose wisely and move away from stagnant, uninspiring work environments. Nourish your career by adopting a constant growth mindset.

2.Plant the right seeds: When a farmer plants seeds, he does so with a clear understanding of what he would like to achieve. Similarly, you should have a clear on what you want and how you want to shape your career. Maintain your focus on gaining the right skills and experience to maintain an upward growth trajectory. Plant the right seeds for continued growth.

3. Love what you do: A farmer is driven by his passion and love for what he does. It is this passion which gives the farmer the fortitude and strength to face any challenges. Behind every productive farm is a committed farmer taking care of his land. In the same way, loving what you do and embarking on a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and eagerness to learn are vital to your success.

 4. A constant quest for learning: Once a student, always a student. Be it a farmer or a regular career professional, learning can never become stagnant, it is a non-stop endeavour. On the farm, there will always be new developments, farming methods and new technologies to discover and learn about. Just like a good farmer, you should be perpetually learning and upgrading your skills.

5. Proactive problem-solving skills: Farming is never an easy career choice. Unforeseen challenges and crisis situations are a constant in a farmer’s life, which always require quick thinking and innovative solutions. Similarly, you need to be proactive in your response to problems. Muster up the courage to stare problems in the face and be quick and innovative in problem-solving.

6. Patience and perseverance: A farmer is aware that rewards come slowly. Just as the seasons come gradually, so does a farmer’s job satisfaction. So patience and emotional resilience are essential to progress in your career. There is no instant reward or quick returns on the farm or at the downtown office.

7. Plant and let the seeds grow: If you micromanage or overwater your plants, they’ll droop and drown in no time. That’s why a farmer is aware that seeds grow only in their own time. In your career, be self-aware, practice self-compassion and achieve your goals in realistic timelines. Plants and careers grow steadily over time.

8. Remove any weeds: It’s important keep the field free from weeds that threaten valuable crops. In a career, the “weeds” can come in the form of outdated processes, repetitive activities or overbearing people who could drain your precious resources and prevent you from focusing on what truly matters. Learn to say no to processes or people that don’t help you progress in your career. Be proactive in studying the career field and progress by removing pesky weeds quickly.

 9. Learn from past harvests: When a harvest goes wrong, a farmer doesn’t panic but uses this knowledge to be better prepared. It’s alright to make mistakes or face challenges but the ones who thrive are the ones always learning from challenges. The next time something doesn’t go according to plan, use the time to review what happened, what you can learn and what you can do differently the next time.

10. Never give up: A farmer prepares for both good and bad seasons. Probably the most essential characteristic of a farmer is a never-give-up attitude. He knows what it takes and braces himself to stay in the game for the long run. Similarly, patience, perseverance and passion will make it possible for you to push through foreseen and unforeseen challenges on the career front.

When it comes to building a career of significance, things can never be rushed. By thinking like a farmer, you’ll sow the seeds of a successful career and reap a bountiful career harvest.
