EJ Obiena Keeps Winning and His Socks Keep Getting More Colorful!

EJ Obiena has just won another gold medal for the Philippines at the Asian Games, and we couldn’t be more proud! The star pole vaulter just beat his own record from Hangzhou 2022 with a 5.91m jump at the Men’s Pole Vault competition in Nagoya.

The Olympics organization congratulated EJ with a post dedicated to his colorful socks. Often spotted in fun, colorful, and occasionally mismatched socks, EJ’s competition-day ritual has long sparked the public’s interest. Through the years, he has worn pairs featuring cartoons, Filipino cultural references, and the faces of the people closest to him, including his parents and coach.

In an interview with EJ, he shared that his vibrant socks “keep things in perspective.” “It’s just sport,” says EJ. “It is important from time to time. It’s not the biggest thing out there in life, and I think the socks remind me of that.”

At the Asian Games, EJ was spotted wearing a pair of yellow, ruffle-trim socks with a fun pineapple print during his record-defining jump. Which makes us wonder: are socks the Filipino’s lucky charm? Cue Alex Eala’s ruffled socks and light-up sneakers moment.
