EXCLUSIVE: Kobie Brown embraces challenging theater role in ‘About Us But Not About Us’

Actor and former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Kobie Brown is embracing the challenge of theater as he takes on the role of Lancelot in the rerun of Jun Robles Lana’s About Us But Not About Us.

In an exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN, Kobie shared how much he has been enjoying the experience of working on the theatrical adaptation, despite the demands of preparing for such a challenging role.

“I’m really, nage-enjoy po talaga ako and actually kanina lang, galing lang po ako ng rehearsal so, medyo pagod ako, but it’s such a privilege to be part of a project like About Us But Not About Us. It’s like Elijah (Canlas) told me before: it’s really an actor’s dream to have such a challenging role like this, such challenging material,” he said.

With the role requiring him to dig deeper into the character, Kobie said he has been putting in the work every day to develop his own interpretation of Lancelot.

“I’m really preparing myself every day to bring justice to that character and have my own twist on my Lancelot,” he added.

His hard work recently received an encouraging nod from none other than the award-winning filmmaker Jun Robles Lana, who directed the original film and attended one of their rehearsals.

“Recently I feel good kasi Direk Jun Robles Lana came to one of our rehearsals and he was really happy with what he saw so it really meant the world to me when he said that, but syempre, I still wanna keep working hard and keep doing my best every single day,” he said.

For Kobie, taking on Lancelot also marks another challenging chapter in his growing theater career, following his experience in the film Sisa, which Direk Jun also helmed.

“I think both of them were very challenging because again, just the material is so heavy and there are a lot of expectations that are placed so it was definitely not the easiest process, challenging, but everyone is making it so easier for me, all my classmates, directors. I’m just so grateful to be ‘round a good space,” he expressed.

Kobie shares the stage with a powerhouse cast for the October rerun of About Us But Not About Us, including Romnick Sarmenta, Elijah Canlas, Epy Quizon, Andoy Ranay, Marlon Rivera, Geraldine Villamil, and Jack Denzel.

The production began its run on October 2 and will continue until October 25 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati.

The psychological drama follows a professor and his student as they share a meal at a restaurant, with secrets gradually coming to light throughout their conversation.

The original film served as an entry in the 2023 Summer Metro Manila Film Festival, where it won 10 awards, including Best Picture.

As Kobie continues to find his footing in theater, he also looks up to fellow actors who have inspired him, particularly his close friends and colleagues Benedix Ramos and Elijah Canlas.

“Role model ko sa theater, and who I really love, is a good friend of mine, si Benedix Ramos. I’ve worked with him before in the past and I’ve seen him on stage, how talented he is, how great he’s doing. I think he just did The Notebook. So proud ako sa’yo, Ben. Because he really deserves it and whenever I watch him, I always see how yung boses niya, pati yung galaw niya, just everything is so perfect, and also syempre si Elijah’s a big one for me also,” Kobie said.
