MANILA — The Philippine National Police warned Filipinos against accepting suspicious job offers and against transporting packages for other people as it investigates a foiled attempt to smuggle hundreds of kilos of shabu from Laos.

PNP chief Police Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities are looking into the smuggling attempt involving a Filipino arrested in Laos and is working to identify other individuals and groups behind the operation.

The police are also preparing for possible changes in drug syndicates’ tactics, including the recruitment of Filipinos as drug couriers or mules to transport illegal substances across borders.

Nartatez cautioned the public against being lured by promises of easy money, saying there have been many cases of Filipinos being arrested and jailed for transporting contraband.

“The amount that the drug syndicates offer is nothing compared to the consequences one will face, including severe penalties, once caught by authorities,” Nartatez said in a statement.

The PNP also renewed its warning to overseas Filipino workers and other travelers against accepting items, souvenirs or pasalubong from acquaintances to bring into or out of the country without checking their contents.

“Huwag tayong pumayag kung hindi naman natin masyadong kilala at wala din namang  mawawala kung iche-check muna natin ang mga ipinapakisuyong dalhin palabas o pabalik ng ating bansa kung ito ay galing sa mga kamag-anak o mga kaibigan,” Nartatez stressed.

(Let us not agree to do it if we do not know that person very well and there is nothing to lose by first checking the contents of any package that relatives or friends ask them to transport across borders.)

The PNP and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) are tightening measures following the foiled smuggling attempt, including coordinating with government agencies overseeing the country’s entry and exit points to prevent drug syndicates from exploiting border controls.

Authorities are also pursuing efforts to dismantle the network behind the operation, particularly foreign drug groups that use the Philippines as a transshipment or distribution point for illegal drugs.
