Amihan season starts
Vendors unpack their Christmas merchandise along the bustling streets of Divisoria to cater to early holiday shoppers in Manila on September 11, 2026. Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News MANILA — The northeast monsoon or amihan season has started, signaling the onset of colder weather associated with Christmas, PAGASA said Tuesday.
The state weather bureau made the announcement after observing that a high pressure area over East Asia strengthened in the past days, which resulted in a surge of northeasterly winds over Luzon’s northern tip.
It said the Amihan was already bringing light rains to parts of northern Luzon, particularly Cagayan, Apayao, and Batanes.
“In the coming months, the Amihan is expected to become dominant over most parts of the country, bringing cooler weather, episodes of cold surges, and rough sea conditions,” PAGASA said.
The weather bureau earlier said that due to Super El Niño, the Amihan season 2026-2027 could be drier and warmer than in the previous years.
Temperatures in the Cordillera may still dip to 9.2°C during the peak of Amihan in January, it said.
