LOOK: Two days before #Undas2026, vendors in Isabela are already selling some components of an ‘atang,’ an Ilocano tradition of preparing food offerings for the dead. Among these are bua (betel nut), gawed (piper leaf), apog (lime powder), and tabako (tobacco).
According to the National Museum of the Philippines, an atang is traditionally prepared during Undas and on other occasions when the dead are remembered, including death anniversaries, the 40th day after death, and babang-luksa.
An atang typically includes an assortment of native delicacies and food items, such as suman, dudul, linapet, baduya, and patupat or balisongsong—mostly made from glutinous rice—as well as busi (caramelized popped rice), linga (black sesame seeds), sticky rice cooked in coconut milk, uncooked rice grains, and fresh eggs. | @AdrianINQ
