UAAP: Whether scoreless or clutch, it’s all about winning for UP’s Remogat

University of the Philippines‘ Rey Remogat against Adamson University in UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball. UAAP Media.MANILA — Coming off a rare game in which he was held scoreless and did not attempt a single field goal, Noy Remogat delivered in crunch time to steer University of the Philippines to its sixth straight victory in UAAP Season 89.

The veteran gunner scored eight of his 12 points in the final period as the Fighting Maroons took care of business against Adamson University, 82-70, but Remogat said he has no issues with whether he scores or not as long as UP comes away with the win.

“Kahit naman zero points ako, basta panalo yung team, masaya ako,” stressed Remogat. “Kung yun ang kailangan, ang dapat mangyari, okay lang sa akin.”

Remogat’s rare scoreless outing, which came in UP’s 101-70 victory over University of the East last October 25, extended into the first half against Adamson as he missed all three of his field-goal attempts.

The 5-foot-10, 24-year-old guard did not make his first basket until the third quarter before adding eight more points to help shut the door on Adamson, and Remogat credited his faith for keeping his head in the right place despite his struggles.

“Yung faith ko kay Lord, ‘di naman nawawala kahit na di pumapasok yung mga tira ko,” said Remogat. “Anong karapatan ko magmukmok?”

For UP deputy coach Christian Luanzon, it is also the off-court factors that allow Remogat to remain deadly whether he scores or not.

“Si Noy, he’s never afraid of the limelight,” said Luanzon. “And I think it comes with his upbringing. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon. So yung fight na meron siya, ‘di lang sa basketball, kundi sa buhay.”

“So second nature na sa kanya ‘to. Obviously, we have some set plays, but kapag may hinihingi si [Coach Goldwin Monteverde], give and take sila roon,” he added.

But as UP continues its push for a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four, Luanzon wants Remogat to continue rediscovering his scoring touch.

“Pero mas gusto pa rin naming pumuntos ka,” he told the former UE guard.

Remogat is embracing the challenge from Luanzon and the Fighting Maroons as UP navigates its final four assignments of the elimination round, but he maintained that inching closer to their goal means more than simply putting the ball in the basket.

“Mas importante sa amin yung everyday process. Yun ang maganda sa amin, namumuhay kami day-by-day. ‘Di namin tinitignan yung Final Four or championship,” said Remogat.
