PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief General Oscar Albayalde expressed support for the reimposition of the death penalty, calling it a “game changer” in its campaign against illegal drugs.

“In response to the SONA (State of the Nation Address) of President (Rodrigo) Duterte, the PNP fully supports the legislative agenda of the national government for effective legislation that will add more teeth to the crusade against crime, drugs and corruption, particularly by imposing capital punishment for drug-related heinous crime and plunder, among others,” Albayalde said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

Albayalde, however, clarified that the PNP recommended that the penalty be imposed only on the big-time drug personalities not on the street-level pushers.

“Usually ito yung talagang heinous hindi naman yung street pushing ito, sabihin ng tao street pushing, ito ay hindi street pushing, ito yung mga bigtime (Usually these are heinous, not the street pushing, people will say street pushing, this is not street pushing, these are the bigtime)” he said.

In his fourth SONA, President Duterte told a joint session of Congress that he wanted the return of the death penalty.
